Turning Down the Noise: A More Natural Conversation About Metabolic Wellness

Use herbs responsibly and in consultation with trusted professionals.

As a Master Herbalist, I've spent years talking with people about herbs, nutrition, and healthy living. During that time, I've noticed something that concerns me more each year.

The conversation around food has become incredibly loud.

People are constantly being told what they should eat, what they should avoid, which diet is the newest breakthrough, which ingredients are harmful, which supplements they need, and now, increasingly, which medication may finally solve the problem. Every week seems to bring another headline promising the answer we've all been waiting for.

Some of that information is helpful.

Much of it is well-intentioned.

But taken together, it can leave us feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, and disconnected from the simple foundations of good health.

At Verdigris, we believe wellness begins by turning down the volume.

Food Noise Isn't Just About Food

The phrase "food noise" has become increasingly common in recent years.

Many people use it to describe the constant internal thoughts surrounding food—wondering what to eat next, thinking about snacks throughout the day, feeling persistent cravings, or negotiating with themselves over every meal.

For some, these thoughts become so persistent that food occupies an astonishing amount of mental space.

Instead of enjoying lunch, they're already thinking about dinner.

Instead of being fully present with family or friends, they're calculating calories, worrying about cravings, or feeling guilty about what they ate earlier.

Food slowly changes from something that nourishes life into something that dominates it.

This constant internal dialogue can become emotionally exhausting.

It often creates guilt where there should be enjoyment, anxiety where there should be nourishment, and self-criticism where there should be self-care. Many people begin to judge themselves by every meal they eat or every craving they experience. Some feel as though they're constantly succeeding or failing rather than simply living.

Over time, this mental burden reaches far beyond the dinner table.

It affects concentration, mood, confidence, relationships, productivity, sleep, and our ability to be fully present in everyday life. When so much emotional energy is devoted to thinking about food, there is simply less room for family, work, hobbies, creativity, and the countless experiences that make life meaningful.

Food was never meant to occupy this much of our minds.

But internal food noise is only part of the story.

The World Has Become Very Loud

There is also an enormous amount of external food noise.

  • One expert tells us carbohydrates are the problem.

  • Another says fat is the enemy.

  • One influencer recommends intermittent fasting.

  • Another insists we should eat six small meals every day.

  • One article praises coffee.

  • The next warns us against it.

  • Every week there seems to be another "perfect" way to eat.

More recently, medications that influence appetite and metabolism have become part of this conversation. For many individuals, these medications have represented an important advancement in medical care and have helped people improve their health under the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals.

They deserve their place in modern medicine.

But they do not replace the foundations of health.

The danger isn't the medications themselves.

The danger is believing that any single intervention—whether it's a diet, a supplement, or a prescription—can carry the entire burden of long-term wellness.

Lasting Health Is More Than Weight Loss

One of the challenges with today's conversation is that we often become so focused on losing weight that we stop talking about becoming healthier.

Those are related goals.

They are not identical.

Many people understandably hope for meaningful changes as quickly as possible after years of frustration. Rapid progress is appealing.

Yet our bodies are remarkably complex.

They continuously adapt to changes in nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, hormones, and body composition. When improvements occur gradually through sustainable lifestyle changes, the body often has time to adapt along the way.

Rapid change is different.

Whether brought about through highly restrictive dieting, illness, bariatric surgery, or medication, significant weight loss over a short period places additional demands on the body.

Muscle mass may be lost alongside body fat.

Nutritional needs become even more important.

Energy levels may fluctuate.

Digestive changes may occur.

Some individuals experience gallbladder complications or medication-specific side effects.

None of this means these treatments are inappropriate.

Far from it.

For many people, they are life-changing therapies that significantly improve health and quality of life.

But they work best when they are part of a much larger commitment to lifelong wellness—not when they are viewed as a substitute for it.

Regardless of how weight changes occur, long-term health still depends upon preserving muscle, nourishing the body well, remaining physically active, sleeping adequately, managing stress, and building sustainable habits that continue long after any treatment ends.

The goal isn't simply to lose weight.

The goal is to build a body that remains strong, resilient, well-nourished, and capable for decades to come.

Returning to the Foundations

At Verdigris, we believe the foundations of metabolic wellness have remained remarkably consistent.

  • Eat nourishing foods.

  • Move your body regularly.

  • Sleep well.

  • Manage stress.

  • Spend time outdoors.

  • Cook more often.

  • Share meals with people you love.

  • And when appropriate, consider herbs as companions that support these healthy habits.

  • There is nothing flashy about this approach.

It doesn't promise overnight transformation.

But it has stood the test of time because it works with the body rather than constantly trying to outsmart it.

Herbs as Partners, Not Shortcuts

Traditional herbalists have long viewed plants differently than modern marketing often does.

Herbs were rarely expected to perform miracles.

Instead, they were used consistently to gently support the body's own natural processes while healthy daily habits provided the foundation.

Several botanicals have been traditionally valued for supporting healthy metabolic function.

Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia)

Long used throughout Asia as both a food and medicinal plant, Bitter Melon has traditionally supported healthy glucose metabolism and overall metabolic balance.

Green Tea (Camellia sinensis)

Rich in naturally occurring antioxidant compounds, Green Tea has been enjoyed for centuries while supporting normal metabolic activity and healthy daily energy expenditure.

Barberry Root (Berberis vulgaris)

Barberry has a long history within European and Middle Eastern herbal traditions. Its naturally occurring constituents have made it one of the most widely studied botanicals for supporting healthy carbohydrate metabolism.

Fenugreek Seed (Trigonella foenum-graecum)

Traditionally valued for both digestion and balanced appetite awareness, Fenugreek has been appreciated for generations as part of a wholesome dietary pattern.

A Thoughtful Botanical Companion

These four botanicals come together in our Metabolic Balance Tincture.

Rather than promising dramatic overnight transformation, this carefully formulated blend is designed to complement the healthy habits that truly build long-term wellness.

It isn't intended to replace nutritious food.

It isn't intended to replace movement.

And it certainly isn't intended to replace appropriate medical care.

Instead, it supports healthy metabolic function as one thoughtful part of a balanced lifestyle—working alongside healthy choices rather than attempting to replace them.

Turning Down the Volume

If the conversation around food has become exhausting, perhaps the answer isn't finding one more diet to follow.

  • Perhaps it's creating enough quiet to hear your own body again.

  • That might mean preparing one meal this week entirely from whole foods.

  • Taking a walk after dinner instead of reaching for your phone.

  • Enjoying a cup of green tea slowly.

  • Learning to recognize the difference between true hunger and habit.

  • Adding more bitter greens and colorful vegetables to your plate.

  • Using herbs to support your body's natural processes rather than expecting them to do all the work.

These aren't dramatic changes.

But lasting wellness is rarely built through dramatic moments.

It is built through thousands of thoughtful decisions made consistently over time.

The Verdigris Philosophy

At Verdigris Market Garden, we believe wellness doesn't have to be driven by fear, guilt, or the latest headline.

Our philosophy is rooted in practical herbalism, nourishing food, joyful movement, and education that helps people become more confident participants in their own health.

Our Metabolic Balance Tincture, featuring Bitter Melon, Green Tea, Barberry Root, and Fenugreek Seed, reflects that philosophy. It was never intended to be a shortcut.

It was intended to become one small, thoughtful part of a much larger lifestyle built upon nourishment, movement, resilience, and consistency.

Because perhaps the healthiest conversation we can have about metabolism isn't about eating less or weighing less.

It's about living well.

And sometimes, living well begins by simply turning down the noise.
