A Rose By Any Other Name

Nestled within the bustling urban landscape of Columbus, Ohio, lies a hidden gem that offers a serene escape from the daily grind—the Columbus Park of Roses. This 13-acre garden, one of the largest municipal rose gardens in the United States, boasts an impressive collection of over 12,000 rose specimens, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat.

Roses serve an important purpose in herbalism, cosmetics, as well as in the perfume industry so we included the plant in our newest book Everyday Herbal and plan to feature roses in the first series of our web program.  We had a couple of opportunities to visit the garden in the last month for location scouting and filming.  I have to admit, I have never toured the gardens extensively and I am sorry I missed out on this treasure until now.

A Floral Wonderland

As you step into the Columbus Park of Roses, you're immediately greeted by a vibrant tapestry of colors and fragrances. The garden is meticulously organized into several distinct sections, each offering its own unique charm and beauty. From the Heritage Rose Garden, featuring antique varieties dating back to the 19th century, to the Formal Rose Garden with its neatly arranged beds and manicured lawns, there is something to captivate every visitor.  There is even a marvelously designed and planted herb garden in the heart of the rose garden that contains many useful herbs that we had the opportunity to film for an upcoming video series!

One of the highlights of the park is the Perennial Garden, where roses are complemented by a diverse array of perennials and annuals. This section not only adds to the visual appeal but also provides a habitat for local wildlife, making it a delightful spot for birdwatchers and insect enthusiasts.

A Journey Through Time and Space

The park is more than just a showcase of floral beauty; it's a living museum that tells the story of rose cultivation through the ages. Walking through the different gardens, you can trace the evolution of rose varieties from ancient times to modern hybrids. Informative plaques and signs provide fascinating insights into the history and horticulture of roses, enriching your visit with knowledge and appreciation for these timeless flowers.

A Haven for Community and Events

Beyond its horticultural splendor, the Columbus Park of Roses is a hub for community activities and events. Throughout the year, the park hosts a variety of workshops, guided tours, and seasonal celebrations that draw visitors of all ages. The spacious gazebo and picturesque surroundings make it a popular venue for weddings, picnics, and family gatherings, creating lasting memories against the backdrop of blooming roses.

Tips for Your Visit

To make the most of your visit to the Columbus Park of Roses, consider the following tips:

Timing is Everything: The peak blooming season for roses is typically late spring to early summer, with June being the best month to see the roses in full bloom. However, the park is beautiful year-round, with different plants and flowers taking center stage in various seasons.

Plan Your Route: The park is quite expansive, so grab a map at the entrance or download one from the park’s website to navigate the different sections efficiently.

Photography Essentials: With such stunning scenery, you’ll want to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the beauty. Early morning or late afternoon light provides the best conditions for photography.

Stay Hydrated and Comfortable: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen, and carry water to stay hydrated, especially during the warmer months.

Engage with the Community: Check the park’s calendar for upcoming events and workshops that might coincide with your visit. Engaging with these activities can enhance your experience and provide deeper insights into the world of roses.
